The Catedral Vieja de Santa María de la Sede is one of Salamanca’s most treasured monuments, a serene Romanesque cathedral that preserves the spiritual and artistic essence of the city’s medieval past. Begun in the 12th century, it is distinguished by its powerful fortress‑like exterior and the iconic Torre del Gallo, whose scalloped dome rises above the historic skyline. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and contemplative, illuminated by soft light that reveals centuries‑old frescoes, sculpted capitals, and chapels rich in symbolism. The cathedral’s masterpiece is the grand altarpiece by Nicolás Florentino, a vivid cycle of Gothic paintings that narrates the life of the Virgin Mary with remarkable detail and colour. Though smaller than the adjoining New Cathedral, the Old Cathedral offers a unique sense of continuity, inviting visitors to step into the origins of Salamanca’s religious heritage and experience a space where history, devotion, and artistry remain beautifully intertwined.

Catedral Vieja de Santa María de la Sede forms part of the cathedral complex at the southern edge of Salamanca’s old town, attached directly to the New Cathedral and reached from the same entrance on Plaza Juan XXIII and Plaza de Anaya. It stands within the UNESCO-listed historic centre, just a short walk from the University of Salamanca’s Escuelas Mayores and Menores and the famous frog façade on Calle Libreros, as well as the Cielo de Salamanca mural and the Ieronimus tower route that runs through the cathedral roofs. Very close by are Casa Lis (the Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum), the Casa-museo Unamuno, the Episcopal Palace and viewpoints over the River Tormes and the Roman Bridge, making the Old Cathedral an easy highlight to combine with Salamanca’s main monuments on foot.
