Torre del Clavero is one of Salamanca’s most distinctive medieval structures, rising above the historic centre with its unique blend of defensive strength and decorative detail. Built in the 15th century as part of the palace of the Sotomayor family, the tower originally served both as a symbol of noble power and as a fortified lookout. Its most striking feature is the upper section, crowned with eight semi‑cylindrical turrets that give it an almost sculptural silhouette. Crafted from the city’s warm sandstone, the tower changes character with the light, echoing the architectural harmony of Salamanca’s old town. Although the palace it once belonged to has largely disappeared, the tower remains a proud reminder of the city’s medieval past. Today it stands beside the Provincial Council building, offering visitors a glimpse into the noble lineage and defensive architecture that shaped Salamanca’s urban landscape.

Torre del Clavero stands on Plaza de Colón in Salamanca’s historic centre, a short walk south of Plaza Mayor and close to the main shopping streets of the old town. It rises beside modern administrative buildings that incorporate the former Sotomayor palace, making the tower a striking medieval landmark amid contemporary offices. Within a few minutes on foot you can reach Plaza Mayor, the cathedrals, the Convento de San Esteban and several other key monuments and museums of Salamanca’s UNESCO‑listed historic core, so it fits easily into any central walking route.
