The historic centre of Salamanca, known as the Casco Histórico, is a beautifully preserved urban ensemble where centuries of culture, learning, and architecture converge. Its golden sandstone buildings glow warmly in the sunlight, creating an atmosphere that feels both ancient and vibrant. At its heart lies the Plaza Mayor, a grand Baroque square that serves as the city’s social hub. From here, narrow streets lead to landmarks such as the twin cathedrals, the University of Salamanca with its famous Plateresque façade, and the Casa de las Conchas adorned with carved shells. Walking through the district reveals Romanesque churches, Renaissance courtyards, and lively cafés that blend seamlessly with student life. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Casco Histórico invites visitors to explore its layered history at a leisurely pace, offering unforgettable views, architectural harmony, and a sense of timeless continuity that defines Salamanca’s identity.
