The Arco da Porta Nova is one of Braga’s most iconic landmarks, welcoming visitors into the historic centre with a blend of Baroque elegance and neoclassical balance. Originally part of the city’s medieval walls, the gate was redesigned in the 18th century to reflect Braga’s growing prestige. Its ornate western façade, crowned by the figure of Our Lady of Nazaré, contrasts with the simpler eastern side that faces the old town. The arch has long symbolised arrival and openness, famously inspiring the local saying that someone “has no Porta Nova” when they are too direct or outspoken. Today, it remains a favourite spot for photographs and a natural starting point for exploring Braga’s ancient streets, churches, and lively squares.
