Open only for a short period each spring and autumn due to its fragility, the garden reveals a world of moss‑covered paths, graceful bridges, and centuries‑old lanterns that seem to glow softly beneath the trees. Its vibrant azaleas, maples, and carefully placed stones reflect the traditional aesthetics of early twentieth‑century Japanese landscape design, brought to life by Baroness Van Brienen, who was inspired by her travels to Japan. Every corner feels intentional, inviting visitors to slow down and appreciate harmony, balance, and seasonal change. Despite its modest size, the Japanese Garden leaves a lasting impression, offering a peaceful retreat where nature, artistry, and cultural heritage blend into a serene and unforgettable experience.

The Japanese Garden is located within Clingendael Park, situated between The Hague city centre and Wassenaar along Wassenaarseweg. This historic estate, known as Landgoed Clingendael, features the garden as its centrepiece amid expansive grounds entered via main gates on Wassenaarseweg, Van Alkemadelaan, Ruychrocklaan or Van Ouwenlaan. Nearby lie the Clingendael manor house with its formal gardens from the 19th century, Huize Clingendael used by the Netherlands Institute of International Relations, extensive woodlands ideal for walking, and a small cafe for refreshments. The adjacent Haagse Bos forest offers further trails and deer spotting, while public bus 20 from The Hague Central Station provides easy access, just a short walk from the Van der Woertstraat stop.
