Munke Mose Park

About

Munke Mose Park is one of Odense’s most beloved green retreats, a lush riverside landscape that blends open lawns, winding waterways and pockets of near‑wild nature. Once a low‑lying meadow prone to winter flooding, the area was transformed in the early 20th century into a spacious urban park designed for recreation and relaxation. Today, visitors enjoy peaceful walks beneath mature trees, quiet moments by the water, and lively scenes around the popular playground. Canoes and small boats drift along the river, adding to the park’s gentle atmosphere. With its mix of manicured areas and natural wetlands, Munke Mose offers a refreshing escape in the heart of the city, inviting both locals and travellers to slow down and enjoy Odense’s softer side.

Location

Munke Mose Park is located in central Odense, Denmark, along the Odense River (Odense Å), with its main entrance near Jagtvej 59, 5000 Odense C. This 8.5-hectare green space, purchased by the municipality in 1881 to preserve it from development, stretches as one of the city's largest parks and serves as a peaceful riverside refuge. Directly within the park visitors will find Odense Aafart, offering river cruises, pedal boat and canoe rentals, plus Nelle's Coffee kiosk and Saabyes Stryg, a fish ladder constructed in 2008. The park features several fairy tale-inspired sculptures including The Little Mermaid, The Wild Swans, and The Seahorse, along with a popular children's playground with oversized natural elements. Nearby attractions include Eventyrhaven (Fairy Tale Garden) just north along the river, Odense Cathedral and City Hall within 800 meters, and H.C. Andersen's House approximately 1 kilometer northeast. Continuing south along the river paths leads to Odense Zoo about 1.5 kilometers away, while Ansgar Anlæg park lies to the west and Fruens Bøge park extends southward, creating a continuous green corridor. The park's riverside location makes it an ideal starting point for walking or cycling routes connecting to H.C. Andersen Quarter, Brandts art museum, and the Odense Harbour area.
