Twierdza Toruń - Fort IV

About

Fort I of the Toruń Fortress is one of the most impressive elements of the 19th‑century defensive ring that once protected the city. Built by the Prussian army, it showcases the era’s advanced military engineering, combining thick earth ramparts, brick casemates, underground tunnels, and strategically placed artillery positions. Although no longer serving its original purpose, the fort has retained much of its authentic structure, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore a largely intact stronghold from this period. Walking through its corridors and open courtyards reveals both the scale of the fortification system and the strategic importance Toruń once held. Today, Fort I is gradually being revitalised through guided tours, historical events, and educational activities that highlight its architectural value and military heritage. Its atmospheric setting, partly reclaimed by nature, makes it a compelling destination for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about the city’s fortified past.
