The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Toruń is one of the city’s most recognisable symbols, honouring the world‑famous astronomer born here in 1473. Standing proudly on the Old Town Square since the mid‑nineteenth century, the bronze figure depicts Copernicus holding an astrolabe, a reminder of his groundbreaking work that placed the Sun at the centre of the universe. The monument has become a natural meeting point for residents and visitors, surrounded by historic townhouses and the lively rhythm of the city. Its inscription, celebrating Copernicus as the one who “stopped the Sun and moved the Earth,” reflects the profound impact of his discoveries on science and human thought. Today, the statue remains a focal point of Toruń’s identity, linking the city’s medieval charm with its enduring legacy as the birthplace of one of history’s greatest thinkers.

Nicolaus Copernicus Monument is located at Rynek Staromiejski in Toruń's UNESCO-listed Old Town Market Square, unveiled in 1853 as a bronze statue depicting the astronomer in academic robes holding an astrolabe and pointing skyward. Its granite pedestal bears a Latin inscription by Alexander von Humboldt: "Nicolaus Copernicus Thorunensis, terrae motor, solis caelique stator," surrounded by stone benches and a dolphin-head fountain. Nearby, the Gothic Old Town Hall towers at the square's center with its museum and leaning tower views, while the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary anchors one corner alongside Artus Court and the House Under the Star. St. John's Cathedral lies just down Żeglarska Street, with the House of Nicolaus Copernicus Museum, riverside boulevards, and gingerbread shops enriching this vibrant historic hub.
