Ruins of the Dybów Castle and the medieval settlement of Nieszawa form one of Toruń’s most atmospheric historical sites, standing on the opposite bank of the Vistula and offering a quieter, more contemplative glimpse into the region’s past. The brick stronghold, founded in the early fifteenth century by King Władysław Jagiełło, once served as a royal residence and a strategic outpost guarding the river crossing. Though only fragments of its walls and towers survive, the site retains a powerful sense of place, surrounded by open space that hints at its former scale. Nearby lie the archaeological traces of the lost town of Nieszawa, relocated in the fifteenth century and now preserved through ongoing research. Together, the castle ruins and the former settlement create a unique historical landscape where visitors can explore layers of medieval history, enjoy open‑air events, and experience Toruń’s heritage in a raw, unpolished form that invites imagination.

Ruins of Dybów Castle and Nieszawa Gród are located on the left bank of the Vistula River in Toruń, directly across from the city center, accessible via a short walk over the Piłsudski road bridge. Built between 1424 and 1428 by Władysław Jagiełło as a Gothic fortress and rival settlement to Teutonic Toruń, the site features surviving perimeter walls, a two-story gate tower, and remnants of the Nieszawa town that once stood beside it. Nearby, explore the Vistula riverside paths, Toruń's Old Town Market Square just across the bridge, the Teutonic Castle ruins, and central landmarks like the House of Nicolaus Copernicus, blending medieval history with scenic river views.
