Pärnu’s Church of the Transformation of Our Lord is one of the city’s most atmospheric Orthodox landmarks, reflecting the spiritual and cultural shifts that shaped the region in the 19th century. Built in 1904, it replaced an earlier wooden church that had served the local Orthodox community since the mid‑1800s. Its architecture blends traditional Russian Orthodox forms with subtle local influences, giving the building a distinctive presence in the cityscape. The church’s most striking feature is its elegant silhouette: a central dome supported by smaller cupolas, all crowned with gilded Orthodox crosses. Inside, the iconostasis stands out as the heart of the church, decorated with richly coloured icons that highlight the craftsmanship of Baltic and Russian icon painters of the era. An interesting historical detail is the church’s role during periods of political upheaval. It remained active through wars and regime changes, serving as a spiritual anchor for Orthodox believers in a predominantly Lutheran region. Despite challenges, the congregation preserved many original liturgical objects, including processional crosses and embroidered vestments.
