Vallikäär Park

About

Vallikäär Park is one of Pärnu’s most atmospheric historic spaces, shaped by the remnants of the city’s 17th‑century Swedish fortifications. The park follows the line of the old defensive earthworks, where massive bastions once protected the harbour town from rival empires. Although the walls were largely dismantled in the 19th century, the contours of the ramparts still give the area its distinctive, gently rising landscape. A central feature is the restored moat, which adds a calm, reflective quality to the park. In summer, its waters mirror the surrounding trees and the nearby concert stage, creating one of Pärnu’s most photogenic spots. The park has long been a gathering place: military parades once marched here, and today it hosts festivals, open‑air performances, and evening strolls. One of the most interesting details is the preserved section of the old fortification gate area, which helps visitors imagine how the fortified city once looked. The combination of history and greenery makes Vallikäär both a cultural landmark and a peaceful retreat in the heart of Pärnu.

Vallikäär Park
Location

Nestled in the center of Pärnu, Vallikäär Park wraps around the historic moat that once protected the medieval town. You’ll find it between the Old Town and the Pärnu River, just a short stroll from Rüütli Street, the city’s main pedestrian promenade. The park is named after the old earthen ramparts, or vallikäär, that still shape its gentle hills. Today it’s a peaceful spot for walks, picnics, and open-air concerts at the Vallikäär Open Air Center, especially lively during summer festivals. Swans and ducks glide on the moat, and flowerbeds add color from spring to autumn. Right nearby, Pärnu’s top attractions are within minutes on foot. Explore the red-brick Tallinn Gate, the last remaining 17th-century city gate, at the park’s edge. Cross the bridge to the Old Town for pastel merchant houses, cozy cafés, and St. Elizabeth’s Church with its baroque tower. Head toward the river and you’ll reach the beach promenade in about 15 minutes, passing the Endla Theatre and Pärnu Museum. The famous white-sand Pärnu Beach, the Rannahotell, and the iconic Beach Park with its fountains are all close. Vallikäär Park is the perfect starting point to experience Pärnu’s mix of history, culture, and seaside charm.
