Vytautas the Great War Museum is one of Lithuania’s most iconic cultural institutions, preserving the nation’s military heritage and its long struggle for independence. Established in 1921 and expanded during the interwar period, the museum became a symbol of the young Lithuanian state, reflecting the pride and ambition of Kaunas when it served as the temporary capital. Its monumental building, shared with the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, is a landmark of Lithuanian modernism. Inside, the museum presents a sweeping narrative of warfare and statehood, from medieval battles of the Grand Duchy to the 20th‑century independence movements. Among its most interesting exhibits are original flags, uniforms, and weapons used by Lithuanian partisans, as well as artefacts linked to Vytautas the Great, the medieval ruler whose legacy inspired the museum’s creation. The courtyard is home to an open‑air exhibition of historic aircraft, artillery, and memorials, including the eternal flame honouring those who fought for freedom. Location

Vytautas the Great War Museum is located in the city centre of Kaunas, Lithuania, on K. Donelaičio Street, in the area of Žaliakalnis close to the Old Town. The museum stands in an imposing interwar‑era building that also houses part of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum, making it a key cultural landmark within the city. Nearby, visitors can walk to Unity Square and the nearby sculptures and monuments, including the Freedom Monument and the statue of Grand Duke Vytautas. The museum is close to the banks of the Nemunas River, the historic Kaunas Castle area and the city’s central pedestrian streets, so it is easy to combine a visit with a stroll along Liberty Avenue, the Old Town, and the Artists’ Quarter. The surrounding district is packed with galleries, cafés and historic buildings, giving a lively and compact sightseeing route right around the museum.
