The Historical Presidential Palace in Kaunas is one of the most important symbols of Lithuania’s interwar independence, serving as the official residence of the country’s presidents from 1920 to 1940. Located in the heart of the Old Town, the palace reflects the spirit of a young state building its identity after centuries of foreign rule. Its elegant neoclassical façade and carefully proportioned interiors were adapted over time to meet the needs of a functioning head‑of‑state residence, hosting diplomatic receptions, cabinet meetings, and key political decisions. Inside, visitors can explore restored presidential apartments that recreate the atmosphere of the interwar era. Period furniture, original documents, and personal belongings of Presidents Antanas Smetona, Aleksandras Stulginskis, and Kazys Grinius offer a vivid glimpse into their daily lives and the challenges of governing a newly independent nation. One of the most interesting exhibits focuses on the cultural and diplomatic life of the time, including gifts from foreign delegations and items used during state ceremonies. The palace also houses temporary exhibitions that explore themes of democracy, statehood, and civic memory. Its garden, once a private presidential retreat, is now a peaceful public space. Today, the Historical Presidential Palace stands as a thoughtful reminder of Lithuania’s formative decades and the resilience of its democratic aspirations.
Kaunas Lithuania
The Historical Presidential Palace is located in Kaunas Old Town, right on Vilniaus Street, the main pedestrian avenue. This elegant 19th-century building served as the official residence of the President of Lithuania from 1919 to 1940, when Kaunas was the temporary capital. Today it’s a branch of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum. Inside you can walk through restored presidential offices, reception halls, and private apartments with authentic 1920s–1930s furniture, documents, and gifts from foreign leaders. The exhibitions tell the story of the interwar Republic of Lithuania, its presidents, and key moments in statehood. The garden behind the palace has a bronze sculpture of all three interwar presidents and is free to visit. The palace is in the center of the Old Town, so you’re surrounded by landmarks. Just a minute away is Town Hall Square with the “White Swan” Kaunas Town Hall and Kaunas Cathedral Basilica. Stroll down Vilnius Street for cafes, galleries, and shops. Kaunas Castle, the oldest brick castle in Lithuania, is a 10-minute walk toward the rivers. Also close are the House of Perkūnas, Vytautas the Great War Museum, and Laisvės Alėja — one of Europe’s longest pedestrian boulevards. The Ninth Fort memorial and Žaliakalnis Funicular are a short bus or taxi ride away.
