Kaunas Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul

About

Kaunas Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is the largest Gothic church in Lithuania and one of the oldest surviving buildings in Kaunas. Its origins date back to the early 15th century, though centuries of fires and reconstructions have layered the structure with Renaissance and Baroque elements. This blend of styles gives the cathedral its distinctive character, where medieval austerity meets later decorative richness. Inside, visitors encounter an impressive Baroque high altar, intricate stucco work and a series of side chapels dedicated to various saints. One of the most interesting features is the sacristy, adorned with rare 18th‑century frescoes that survived multiple city fires. The cathedral also houses notable artworks, including paintings by prominent Lithuanian artists and historic liturgical objects that reflect the city’s long religious tradition. A highlight is the monumental organ, often used for concerts that fill the vast interior with resonant sound. The cathedral’s quiet chapels, vaulted ceilings and soft natural light create an atmosphere of reflection, making it both a spiritual centre and a key architectural landmark in Kaunas.
