Church of St. Michael the Archangel

About

Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Kaunas, often called Soboras, is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Built in the late 19th century for the Russian Imperial Army, it originally served as an Orthodox garrison church before becoming a Catholic place of worship after Lithuania regained independence. Its monumental Neo‑Byzantine design, crowned with five domes, reflects its military origins and gives it a striking presence at the end of Laisvės Alėja. Inside, visitors find a spacious, light‑filled interior shaped by tall arches and a central dome that creates a sense of openness. The church features elegant altars, detailed iconography and restored decorative elements that highlight its layered history. One of the most interesting aspects is how the building’s identity shifted over time, mirroring the political changes that shaped Kaunas. The acoustics are excellent, making the church a popular venue for choral and classical concerts. Its blend of imperial architecture, spiritual atmosphere and cultural significance makes it a compelling stop for anyone exploring the city.
