Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology

About

Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology is one of Lithuania’s oldest and most distinctive scientific museums, founded in 1919 by the renowned naturalist Tadas Ivanauskas. Created to educate the public and preserve the country’s biodiversity, it grew rapidly during the interwar years, becoming a cornerstone of Kaunas’ cultural and academic life. Its historic building, with its grand staircase and period interiors, still carries the atmosphere of early 20th‑century scientific exploration. Inside, visitors find an extensive collection of taxidermy animals from Lithuania and around the world. One of the most interesting sights is the impressive display of birds—hundreds of species arranged in lifelike poses, showcasing the richness of avian life. The museum also houses large mammals, including bears, wolves, and exotic species that once fascinated early researchers. A highlight is the insect collection, where delicate butterflies and beetles reveal the extraordinary diversity of the natural world. Educational dioramas recreate forest, wetland, and steppe habitats, offering a vivid sense of how animals interact with their environments. The museum remains a place where science, history, and curiosity meet, continuing Ivanauskas’ mission to inspire a deeper understanding of nature.
