Ąžuolynas Park in Kaunas is one of Europe’s largest urban oak groves, a rare natural treasure growing right in the heart of the city. Its ancient oaks—some more than 300 years old—create a unique atmosphere that blends forest calm with urban energy. The park has long been a favourite retreat for writers, students and athletes, and it remains closely tied to the history of Lithuanian sports, as the legendary “Lituanica” stadium once stood nearby. Walking through the park, visitors can explore winding paths shaded by towering oaks, open meadows ideal for picnics and quiet corners perfect for reflection. One of the most interesting features is the connection to the Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum, whose outdoor enclosures once extended into the park. Today, the area around the Kaunas Sports Hall adds a cultural layer, hosting events and concerts that bring new life to the historic landscape. Families enjoy the playgrounds and spacious lawns, while nature lovers appreciate the biodiversity that thrives under the old trees. Ąžuolynas remains a living symbol of Kaunas—green, historic and full of character.
Kaunas Lithuania
Ąžuolynas Park, also known as Oak Grove, lies in the Žaliakalnis district of Kaunas, on the western side of the city, nestled between residential streets and the main Vydūno avenue. It is one of the largest urban oak‑wood parks in Europe, covering around 84 hectares of dense, mature trees and winding paths. The park sits just above the Nemunas river escarpment, close to other green areas and recreation spots in Žaliakalnis. Directly next to Ąžuolynas you find the Lithuanian Zoological Garden, where a woodland walk easily turns into a family‑friendly animal‑park visit. Nearby too is Darius and Girėnas Stadium and the smaller Vytauto Park, which offers playgrounds and sports fields alongside the more tranquil oak grove. From the park you can also reach the funicular rail stations on Žaliakalnis and the roads leading up to Pažaislis Monastery, so Ąžuolynas makes a natural base for combining a quiet forest‑like stroll with city sights along the river and the surrounding hills.
