The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is one of Karlovy Vary’s most striking Baroque landmarks, designed by the renowned architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and completed in the 1730s. Built on the site of an older Gothic church, it stands directly opposite the Hot Spring Colonnade, creating a dramatic contrast between sacred architecture and the town’s spa life. One interesting fact is that during renovations, a hidden crypt was discovered beneath the church, containing rare Baroque ossuaries and ritual objects linked to local burial traditions. Inside, the church impresses with its soaring nave, richly sculpted altars, and soft interplay of light created by tall arched windows. The main altar features an expressive statue of St. Mary Magdalene, framed by dynamic Baroque ornamentation. Visitors can also admire the beautifully carved pulpit, side chapels dedicated to regional saints, and a historic organ that still accompanies concerts. The crypt, accessible on guided tours, reveals preserved stone chambers and exhibits on funerary customs. The church remains an active spiritual centre, blending artistic grandeur with centuries of local history.

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene stands in the very heart of Karlovy Vary's spa area at Náměstí Svobody 1, directly in the center of the town approximately 100 meters from the Hot Spring Colonnade. Nearby, you can explore the famous Hot Spring Colonnade housing the Vřídlo geyser that shoots thermal water up to 12 meters high, the largest and most iconic colonnade in Karlovy Vary. Just steps away are the Mill Colonnade, built in Pseudo-Renaissance style between 1871 and 1881 with five mineral springs inside, and the beautifully carved wooden Market Colonnade in Swiss style from 1882–1883, which houses three more springs. The Castle Tower (Zámecká věž), the last remaining part of Emperor Charles IV's 14th-century Gothic castle, offers panoramic views and houses a stylish restaurant and gallery. The Imperial Spa (Císařské lázně), a stately Pseudo-Renaissance building from 1893–1895, and the Grandhotel Pupp are both within easy walking distance in the southern part of the spa center. The Diana Observation Tower, accessible by funicular or foot, provides sweeping views of the entire city, the Ohře and Teplá River valleys, and the surrounding mountains.
