Deer Jump Lookout is one of Karlovy Vary’s most atmospheric viewpoints, perched on a rocky cliff directly above the spa quarter. Its name comes from a local legend: a hunted deer is said to have leapt from this very rock to escape, giving the site a dramatic, almost mythical aura. The lookout became popular in the 19th century, when spa guests sought scenic walks through the surrounding forests and hills. The highlight is the elegant statue of a chamois standing on the edge of the cliff, created in 1851 and now one of the town’s most photographed symbols. From the platform you get a sweeping view of the colonnades, the river valley, and the colourful rooftops of the old town. Although there is no interior to explore, the area around the lookout offers several charming forest paths, including routes leading to the Diana Tower and the Goethe Lookout. Benches and small resting spots make it an ideal pause during a longer walk.

Deer Jump Lookout (Jelení skok) is a charming wooden observation arbour perched on a rocky outcrop west above the centre of Karlovy Vary, at an elevation of 472 metres. You can reach the lookout easily by taking the Diana funicular from Grandhotel Pupp to the Jelení skok (Deer Jump) intermediate station, then following a comfortable path past the Myslivna (Gamekeeper’s Lodge) Sanatorium to Peter’s Height and the lookout arbour. Alternatively, you can walk up from the Hot Spring in the town centre along forest paths and stone stairs past a chamois statue. Nearby attractions make this area ideal for a short sightseeing walk. The Diana Observation Tower is just a short hike further up the hill, offering even wider panoramic views over Karlovy Vary and the surrounding forested hills. Close to the lookout, you’ll find the Deer Leap restaurant, the Myslivna sanatorium, and the statue of a mountain goat (chamois) standing on a rock, an iconic symbol of Karlovy Vary. From Deer Jump, you can easily continue down toward Grandhotel Pupp, the famous historic hotel, and then descend into the spa centre to visit the key attractions such as the Mill Colonnade, Market Colonnade, Park Colonnade, and the hot spring geyser. The lookout is freely accessible year-round and offers a peaceful, scenic stop with excellent views of the town and its lush hills.
