Market Colonnade is one of Karlovy Vary’s most distinctive structures, a delicate wooden pavilion carved in the ornate Swiss style. Built in 1883 as a temporary shelter for spring drinkers, it quickly became a beloved symbol of the spa town. Its lace‑like façade, crafted from white-painted timber, was meant to evoke lightness and elegance, contrasting with the grand stone colonnades nearby. Despite its “temporary” origins, it has survived for more than a century thanks to careful restoration. Inside, you can taste three important springs: Charles IV Spring, believed to be the oldest in the town’s history; the Lower Castle Spring; and the Market Spring, each with its own mineral character. The interior’s wooden arches create a warm, intimate atmosphere, especially in the early morning when steam from the springs drifts through the pavilion. The colonnade stands on the site where Emperor Charles IV is said to have discovered the healing waters, adding a legendary dimension to the visit.

The Market Colonnade (Tržní kolonáda) is a beautifully carved wooden structure located on the left bank of the Teplá River in the historic centre of Karlovy Vary. Built in Swiss style between 1882 and 1883 by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, it underwent extensive reconstruction in the early 1990s and remains freely accessible today. Nearby attractions make this area ideal for a compact walking tour of the spa centre. Just across Jánský Bridge from the Hot Spring Colonnade is the Market Colonnade, a short 2–3 minute walk away. The famous Hot Spring Colonnade with its 12-metre geyser is easily reachable on foot, as is the larger neo-Renaissance Mill Colonnade on the opposite riverbank. Also nearby are the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, a Baroque church with rich religious art and an underground crypt, the Imperial Spa (Císařské lázně), and Dvorák Park with the cast-iron Park Colonnade. Within easy walking distance are the Grandhotel Pupp, the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre, the Diana Observation Tower (accessible by funicular from Grandhotel Pupp), and the Jan Becher Museum dedicated to the local herbal liqueur. The Market Colonnade is open 24 hours and serves as a perfect starting point for exploring Karlovy Vary’s beautiful spa architecture and springs.
