The Cella Septichora Visitor Center in Pécs is one of the most atmospheric gateways into Hungary’s early Christian past. Built around a complex of 4th‑century burial chambers, it forms part of the UNESCO‑listed Early Christian Necropolis, a site that reveals how vibrant and sophisticated Roman‑era Sopianae once was. Its name comes from the remarkable seven‑apsed chapel—an unusual architectural form in the late Roman world—that remains partly preserved beneath the modern structure. Inside, visitors walk on glass platforms suspended above ancient tombs, mosaics, and painted walls. The most captivating features are the frescoed burial chambers, where delicate images of doves, vines, and biblical scenes still survive after more than 1,600 years. The Tomb of Peter and Paul, with its vivid early Christian iconography, is a highlight, offering a rare glimpse into the spiritual life of the community that lived here.
