Jakováli Hasszán Pasa Dzsámi

About

The Jakováli Hasszán Pasha Mosque in Pécs is one of the most evocative reminders of the city’s Ottoman past and the only Turkish‑era mosque in Hungary that still preserves both its prayer hall and its original minaret. Built in the late 16th century, it once formed part of a larger dervish complex, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a centre of spiritual teaching. Inside, visitors find a serene, atmospheric space marked by simple yet elegant Ottoman architectural elements. The mihrab niche, pointing toward Mecca, is one of the highlights, along with the reconstructed interior decorations that evoke the mosque’s original appearance. Exhibits present everyday objects, religious artefacts, and historical documents that explain how the dervish order lived and practiced here. The minaret, rising slender and graceful above the building, is a rare survivor of its kind in Hungary and gives the site its unmistakable silhouette.

Location

The Jakováli Hasszán Pasa Dzsámi is Pécs’s most important Ottoman monument and the only complete mosque with a standing minaret in Hungary. Built in the late 16th to early 17th century, it dates from the time when Pécs was part of the Ottoman Empire. The mosque is a square building with a large dome and a slender minaret, and it remains an active place of Islamic faith today. Its location at Rákóczi út 2 puts it in a quiet but central part of Pécs, about 500 metres from the main square. From Széchenyi Square, you can walk southwest along Széchenyi tér, continue onto Rákóczi út, and after a few minutes you will see the mosque on your left. Nearby tourist attractions include the historic city centre, Széchenyi Square, Pécs Cathedral, the Downtown Candlemas Church (the former Mosque of Pasha Qasim), the Bishop’s Palace, the Cella Septichora Visitor Centre, the Ferenc Martyn Museum, the Victor Vasarely Museum, the Csontváry Museum, and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. The surrounding streets are filled with museums, churches, and historic buildings, making the area ideal for a cultural walk through Pécs.
