The Richard Wagner Museum occupies the serene lakeside villa of Tribschen, where the composer lived from 1866 to 1872 — years he later described as some of the happiest of his life. The house retains much of its original atmosphere, offering a rare glimpse into Wagner’s private world. It was here that he completed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and began work on Götterdämmerung, and where his daughter Isolde was born. Inside, visitors find rooms preserved with period furniture, manuscripts, and personal belongings, including Wagner’s grand Erard piano. The “Wagner Salon” displays portraits, letters, and early editions that trace his artistic circle and friendships. A highlight is the room where the Siegfried Idyll was first performed as a surprise birthday gift for his wife Cosima, played by a small ensemble on the villa’s staircase at dawn. The museum also presents multimedia installations exploring Wagner’s influence on music, theatre, and European culture. Outside, the peaceful park and sweeping views of Lake Lucerne create a contemplative setting that contrasts with the composer’s famously dramatic works.
