Church of St. Leodegar

About

The Church of St. Leodegar, often called the Hofkirche, is one of Lucerne’s defining landmarks and a masterpiece of early Swiss Baroque architecture. Built between 1633 and 1639 on the foundations of a medieval monastery, it survived the city’s great fire of 1633, making it one of the few major churches in Switzerland with substantial pre‑Baroque elements. Its twin towers, rising above Lake Lucerne, form one of the city’s most recognisable silhouettes. Inside, the church impresses with a richly carved high altar, glowing with gilded details and framed by dramatic columns. The choir stalls, crafted by Swiss woodcarvers, are among the finest in the country, decorated with expressive biblical scenes. A highlight is the monumental organ, whose powerful sound fills the nave during concerts and services; its origins date back to the 17th century, though it has been expanded over time. Visitors also notice the elegant Lady Chapel, the treasury’s liturgical objects, and the peaceful cloister that recalls the site’s monastic past. St. Leodegar’s blend of medieval roots and Baroque splendour makes it an essential stop for anyone exploring Lucerne’s cultural heritage.
