Chapel Bridge is Lucerne’s signature landmark—an elegant wooden footbridge first built in 1333 to protect the city from attacks. Today it’s the oldest surviving truss bridge in Europe and one of Switzerland’s most photographed sites. Its diagonal path across the Reuss is unusual: medieval engineers designed it to link the city’s fortifications at an angle, making it harder for enemies to approach. Inside the bridge, the most fascinating feature is its collection of triangular historical paintings. Created in the 17th century, they depict episodes from Lucerne’s history and the lives of local saints. Many were damaged in the devastating 1993 fire, but restored panels now highlight both their artistic value and the bridge’s resilience. The Wasserturm—the octagonal water tower beside the bridge—is even older, dating to around 1300. Over the centuries it served as a prison, archive, treasury, and watchtower. Its thick stone walls contrast beautifully with the bridge’s timber structure.
Lucerne Switzerland
The Chapel Bridge is one of Lucerne’s best-known landmarks, crossing the River Reuss in the heart of the Old Town. It links the area near the Lucerne Theatre with St. Peter’s Chapel and is famous for its covered wooden structure and historic paintings. Its location makes it an easy stop on any city walk, since several major sights are nearby. Just a short stroll away you can see the Water Tower, the Old Town streets, the Jesuit Church, the Lucerne railway station, and the KKL Lucerne culture and convention center. Visitors also often combine the bridge with the Spreuer Bridge, Musegg Wall, and the lakeside promenade, all of which are close and easy to reach on foot. Because the bridge sits in such a central position, it works well as the starting point for exploring Lucerne’s historic core.
