The Bourbaki Panorama is one of Europe’s last surviving 19th‑century cycloramas, a spectacular 112‑metre‑long circular painting created in 1881 by Edouard Castres. It depicts the dramatic winter of 1871, when 87,000 defeated French soldiers under General Bourbaki crossed into Switzerland and were granted refuge — a landmark moment in humanitarian history and a defining chapter for the Swiss tradition of neutrality. Inside the rotunda, visitors stand on a central platform surrounded by the vast painting, enhanced with three‑dimensional foreground elements such as real objects, snow, and camp structures. This immersive staging blurs the line between art and theatre, placing viewers directly in the middle of the scene. Exhibits around the panorama explore the internment operation, the role of the Red Cross, and the logistical challenge of sheltering an entire army. The building itself, once a grand 19th‑century armoury, now hosts cultural spaces and a cinema, adding a contemporary layer to this historic site.

Bourbaki Panorama is one of Lucerne’s most unusual cultural attractions, located at Löwenplatz 11 in the centre of the city. The museum is known for its large circular panorama and for its strong connection to European history. Its position in the monument quarter means it is simple to combine with other sights on a walking tour of Lucerne. Nearby, visitors can explore some of the city’s best-known attractions.
