The Jesuit Church is one of Lucerne’s most elegant landmarks and the first large Baroque church built in Switzerland. Completed in 1677, it marked the arrival of the Jesuits, who were invited to strengthen Catholic education during the Counter‑Reformation. Its soft white façade and onion‑shaped towers form a graceful contrast to the medieval skyline across the Reuss River. Inside, the church reveals a bright, harmonious Baroque interior. The stucco decoration by Italian masters adds flowing floral motifs and delicate sculptural details. The main altar, glowing with gilded ornamentation, frames a painting of St. Francis Xavier, reflecting the Jesuits’ missionary spirit. Side chapels contain expressive altarpieces and devotional artworks that highlight the order’s emphasis on teaching and contemplation. A notable feature is the crypt, where members of Lucerne’s patrician families were buried. The church also houses the tomb of Father Ludwig Pfyffer, a key figure in Lucerne’s political history. During concerts, the acoustics of the nave reveal why the Jesuit Church is beloved by musicians: its warm resonance enhances both choral and instrumental performances.

Jesuit Church is a beautiful Baroque church in the heart of Lucerne, standing directly beside the River Reuss. It was built in the 17th century and is widely regarded as one of the most impressive churches in Switzerland.
