The Planetarium at the Verkehrshaus is one of Switzerland’s most advanced immersive astronomy venues, combining scientific precision with theatrical spectacle. Opened in 1969 and continually upgraded, it now features a state‑of‑the‑art projection system capable of displaying 360‑degree visuals with remarkable clarity. This allows visitors to “travel” through the Solar System, dive into nebulae, or witness cosmic events reconstructed from real astronomical data. Inside, the domed theatre seats around 230 people in a steep, enveloping layout that enhances the sensation of floating in space. The highlight is the full‑dome projection, which uses millions of pixels to create seamless celestial panoramas. Shows range from family‑friendly journeys to the planets to scientifically rich programs developed with observatories and space agencies. An interesting feature is the real‑time sky simulator, which can recreate the night sky from any point on Earth—or even from Mars. Visitors also encounter interactive exhibits in the foyer, including meteorite samples and hands‑on demonstrations explaining gravity, light, and orbital mechanics.

Location

The Verkehrshaus Planetarium is located at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, on Haldenstrasse near Lake Lucerne. It is one of the city’s most popular family-friendly attractions and can be reached easily from the station, by bus, by boat, or on foot along the lakeside promenade. Nearby, visitors can also explore the main Museum of Transport itself, the Film Theatre, the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, and the lakeside Lido area. This part of Lucerne is especially attractive for combining indoor activities with a walk by the water and views of the surrounding mountains.
