Zytturm is the most famous tower of Lucerne’s Museggmauer, celebrated for its historic city clock that has marked time since 1535. Built by the Zurich clockmaker Hans Luter, it holds a unique privilege: it chimes one minute earlier than every other clock in Lucerne, a tradition symbolising its seniority. The tower itself dates to the late 14th century and served as a key defensive structure overlooking the northern approach to the city. Inside, visitors climb wooden stairways through several levels that reveal the clock’s intricate mechanism. The large iron movement, still functioning, showcases early Swiss engineering and the precision that later made the country a leader in horology. Interpretive displays explain how the clock was maintained, how weights were lifted daily, and how its bell became part of Lucerne’s soundscape. At the top, narrow windows open onto sweeping views of the old town, the lake, and the distant Alps.
