The Collection de l’Art Brut is one of Lausanne’s most distinctive museums, dedicated to artworks created outside traditional cultural and academic circles. Founded by Jean Dubuffet in 1976, it celebrates creativity born in isolation—works by self‑taught artists, psychiatric patients, recluses and visionaries who created not for fame but out of inner necessity. This makes the museum unlike any other: raw, intimate and deeply human. Inside, the permanent galleries present masterpieces of Art Brut, ranging from intricate drawings to monumental sculptures. Many pieces reveal astonishing technical skill despite the artists’ lack of formal training. The museum’s most fascinating section features invented worlds—imaginary cities, languages and mythologies built with obsessive detail. These creations feel like stepping into someone’s private universe. Another highlight is the display of unconventional materials. Artists used whatever they had: cardboard, string, soot, found objects, even homemade pigments. Their resourcefulness adds a tactile, almost archaeological quality to the works. Collection de l’Art Brut is located at Avenue des Bergières 11, in the Beaulieu area of Lausanne, inside the 18th-century Château de Beaulieu. It is a unique museum devoted to outsider art, so it offers a very different experience from Lausanne’s more traditional art institutions. The museum is close to central Lausanne, and it is easy to combine with a walk through the city’s cultural district. Nearby, visitors can also explore the Beaulieu quarter, where local events and cultural venues create a lively atmosphere. For more sightseeing, Lausanne’s old town is within reach, with its historic streets, viewpoints, and cathedral area offering some of the city’s most rewarding walks. The lakefront at Ouchy and The Olympic Museum are also good options for a longer outing, especially if you want to combine art with scenery and major attractions.
