Château Saint‑Maire is one of Lausanne’s most imposing historic buildings, a fortified residence built between 1397 and 1425 for the bishops who once governed the city. Its red‑tiled roof and robust towers give it a distinctive silhouette above the old town, making it both a defensive stronghold and a symbol of ecclesiastical authority. Today, it serves as the seat of the Vaud government, but its medieval character remains strikingly intact. Inside, visitors can explore selected areas during special openings. The highlight is the Great Hall, where Gothic beams and stone details evoke the castle’s original ceremonial function. You’ll also find remnants of medieval wall paintings and architectural elements that reveal how bishops balanced power with comfort. The courtyard is particularly atmospheric, framed by arcades and offering views of the castle’s massive walls. One of the most interesting facts is that Château Saint‑Maire played a key role during the Bernese conquest of 1536, marking the end of episcopal rule in Lausanne. Despite political upheavals, the building survived largely unchanged, making it one of Switzerland’s best‑preserved late‑medieval castles.
