The Cantonal Museum of Archaeology and History is one of Lausanne’s most fascinating cultural institutions, tracing human presence in the region from prehistoric settlements to the modern era. Founded in 1886, it now forms part of the Plateforme 10 district, where its collections are displayed with a clarity that highlights both scientific detail and storytelling. Inside, the journey begins with prehistoric Lausanne. Stone tools, pottery fragments and burial objects reveal how early communities lived along Lake Geneva thousands of years ago. The museum’s Celtic and Roman sections are especially compelling: coins, jewellery and architectural remnants illustrate Lausanne’s role as a lakeside settlement during antiquity. A reconstructed Roman domestic interior offers a vivid sense of everyday life. Medieval Lausanne is presented through weapons, seals, manuscripts and objects linked to the city’s early fortifications. One highlight is the collection of archaeological finds from the cathedral hill, showing how the city grew around its religious centre. Interactive displays explain excavation techniques and allow visitors to explore digital reconstructions of long‑lost structures.

Location

The Cantonal Museum of Archaeology and History is located in the Palais de Rumine on Place de la Riponne in the heart of Lausanne. It is one of the city’s most important history museums and presents 15,000 years of Vaud’s past. Its central location makes it easy to combine with other Lausanne sights. Nearby, visitors can explore the Palais de Rumine itself, Place de la Riponne, and the steep old-town streets that lead toward the cathedral area and historic viewpoints. Also close by are the Lausanne Cathedral, the Escaliers du Marché, and other museums around the old center, making this a very good area for a cultural walking route. If you want to extend the visit, the lakefront at Ouchy and The Olympic Museum are also reachable from the city center.
