The Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts (MCBA) is one of Lausanne’s cultural powerhouses, housed since 2019 in the striking Plateforme 10 arts district. Its new building, with its minimalist stone façade and vast natural‑light galleries, was designed to give modern and contemporary art room to breathe. The museum’s origins stretch back to 1841, making it one of Switzerland’s oldest public art collections—yet its current home feels boldly forward‑looking. Inside, visitors encounter a rich blend of Swiss modernism, international contemporary works and thematic exhibitions. The museum is especially known for its holdings of Vaud artists, including Félix Vallotton, whose sharp lines and atmospheric scenes reveal a unique vision of early 20th‑century Europe. Sculptures, installations and large‑scale paintings are displayed in spacious rooms that encourage slow, attentive viewing. The Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne is now located at Plateforme 10, on Place de la Gare 16, just a short walk from Lausanne’s main railway station. It is part of the city’s modern arts district and is one of the most important places in Lausanne for seeing Swiss and international art. Because it is so close to the station, the museum is easy to combine with other nearby attractions. Visitors can also explore the other museums at Plateforme 10, including mudac and Photo Elysée, which makes the area a strong cultural stop in its own right. Nearby sightseeing can continue into central Lausanne, where the old town, the cathedral area, and the steep historic streets offer some of the city’s best views and atmosphere. If you want a longer outing, the lakeside district of Ouchy and The Olympic Museum are also within easy reach by metro.
