Lausanne Botanical Garden is one of the city’s quiet scientific treasures, a hillside sanctuary where more than 6,000 plant species unfold across terraces, rockeries, and greenhouses. Founded in 1824, it reflects Lausanne’s long tradition of botanical research, and its compact size makes every corner feel purposeful. The garden’s charm lies in its blend of Alpine character and global diversity. Inside the grounds, the alpine rock garden is a highlight, showcasing plants from high‑mountain habitats arranged among natural stone. It’s a miniature landscape of cushion plants, tiny saxifrages, and hardy blooms that reveal how vegetation adapts to extreme climates. The medicinal plant section offers another layer of discovery, tracing centuries of herbal knowledge through species still used in modern pharmacology. The greenhouses hold some of the garden’s most intriguing specimens: carnivorous plants, tropical ferns, and succulents with sculptural forms. Visitors also enjoy the historic herbarium, one of Switzerland’s oldest, where preserved specimens document regional flora and scientific exploration.

Lausanne Botanical Garden is one of the city’s most relaxing places to visit. It is located on Montriond Hill at Avenue de Cour 14B, just south of Lausanne’s main railway station and within easy reach of the lake. Although it feels quiet and removed from the city, it is actually very central and easy to include in a day of sightseeing. Nearby, visitors can explore Place de Milan and the attractive lakeside area, which are pleasant for a walk before or after the garden. The Olympic Museum in Ouchy is also within a short distance and is one of Lausanne’s most popular tourist attractions.
