Tailors’ Tower in Cluj‑Napoca is one of the last surviving medieval fortifications of the old citadel, a structure that once guarded the southeastern corner of the city walls. Built in the 15th century and later expanded, it was maintained by the Tailors’ Guild, whose members were responsible for defending this sector during sieges. Its thick stone walls, narrow windows, and elevated firing positions still convey the tension of a frontier city protecting itself from Ottoman and Tatar incursions. Today, the tower serves as a small but atmospheric exhibition space. Inside, visitors can explore displays on Cluj’s guild system, a network of craftsmen who shaped the city’s economy and urban identity. Original tools, guild chests, and ceremonial insignia illustrate how tailors organized their trade, trained apprentices, and took part in civic life. The interior also reveals the tower’s defensive structure: wooden floors reconstructed according to historical plans, vaulted chambers, and the upper level where guards once kept watch.

One of the last surviving pieces of medieval Cluj, the Tailors’ Tower sits at the southeast corner of the old city walls on Strada Baba Novac. Built in the 15th century and rebuilt between 1627 and 1629, it was entrusted to the powerful Tailors’ Guild, who maintained and defended this robust section of the fortifications. Its thick stone walls, narrow windows, and commanding position made it one of the strongest points in the city’s defenses. Right beside the tower stands the statue of Baba Novac, the general of Michael the Brave who was executed here in 1601. The tower is just a short walk from Avram Iancu Square, home to the Orthodox Cathedral and the National Theatre, and from Museum Square with its cafés, the Franciscan Church, and the National Museum of Transylvanian History. St. Michael’s Church, Bánffy Palace, and the Art Museum in Piața Unirii are also nearby, as is Cetățuia Hill for panoramic sunsets. Stop by, soak up the history, then wander the old town’s cobbled streets and lively terraces.
