Széki Palace in Cluj‑Napoca is one of the city’s lesser‑known architectural gems, a refined 18th‑century residence that once belonged to the noble Széki family. Its façade blends Baroque and early Neoclassical elements, with elegant window frames and a discreetly sculpted portal that hints at the aristocratic life once lived inside. Though smaller than the city’s grand palaces, it stands out for its balanced proportions and the quiet dignity of its design. Inside, visitors can explore restored rooms that reveal fragments of the building’s original character: vaulted ceilings, wooden beams, and traces of decorative painting uncovered during conservation works. The palace often hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and small art shows, turning its historic interiors into a contemporary creative space. Rising above the banks of the Someșul Mic River, Széki Palace is one of Cluj-Napoca’s most striking Gothic Revival landmarks. Built in 1893 for university professor and pharmacist Miklós Széki by Hungarian architect Samu Pecz, the palace was the first grand building to go up around the iron bridge completed just a few years earlier. Its pointed arches, ornate stonework, and steep roofs give it a fairy-tale silhouette that stands out on Strada Regele Ferdinand, not far from the city center. Originally, Széki ran his pharmacy, named after King Matthias Corvinus, on the ground floor while living upstairs. You’re only a short walk from the Franciscan Church and the Museum Square, where cafés and bars fill the old Baroque courtyards. The National Museum of Transylvanian History and the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj are about five minutes away, and St. Michael’s Church, Bánffy Palace, and the Art Museum are all within a ten-minute stroll. Cross the bridge and you’ll reach Central Park and the Casino, or head toward the Tailors’ Bastion and the remnants of the medieval city walls. In the evening, the area buzzes with pubs and restaurants, making Széki Palace a perfect photo stop on the way to dinner in the old town.
