Pharmacy Museum Cluj‑Napoca occupies the city’s oldest apothecary, opened in 1573, a place where medicine, alchemy, and early chemistry once intertwined. Its rooms preserve the atmosphere of a Renaissance pharmacy: vaulted ceilings, wooden counters, and drawers labeled with Latin names that once held herbs, minerals, and curious remedies. The museum’s most intriguing feature is its collection of pharmaceutical secrets. Among them are jars of theriac, a legendary universal antidote, and vials of powdered gemstones once believed to cure fevers. The laboratory in the back room shows how pharmacists distilled tinctures using copper stills, glass alembics, and ceramic furnaces. Visitors can explore the “Material Room,” filled with exotic ingredients such as cinnamon from Ceylon, myrrh from the Levant, and dried plants gathered in Transylvanian forests. The original wooden furniture, carved by local craftsmen, remains intact, giving the space a warm, almost monastic character.

Tucked into the heart of Cluj-Napoca’s old town, the Pharmacy Museum sits inside the historic Mauksch–Hintz House on Piața Unirii, the city’s grand central square. This was the site of Cluj’s oldest pharmacy, documented as early as 1573, and walking through its original 18th-century rooms feels like stepping into an alchemist’s world. The ground floor preserves the Officina where medicines were once sold, complete with a faded fresco and rows of wooden drawers filled with glass, ceramic, and wooden apothecary jars. Downstairs, the old laboratory holds copper burners, bronze mortars, and glass bulbs used to prepare ointments and tinctures, while other rooms display surgical tools, early X-ray devices, and a fully furnished treatment space. Because it’s right on Unirii Square, you can easily pair your visit with the city’s main landmarks. Step outside and you’re in front of the towering Gothic St. Michael’s Church and the famous Matthias Corvinus statue. A short stroll takes you to the Art Museum of Cluj-Napoca in Bánffy Palace, the National Museum of Transylvanian History, and the Franciscan Church. Cafés and bookshops line the square, and the Roman archaeological site lies just beneath the pavement. From here, Eroilor Boulevard leads to Babes-Bolyai University and the lively shops of the pedestrian center.
