Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden in Cluj‑Napoca is one of Romania’s most beautiful scientific gardens, founded in 1920 and shaped by botanist Alexandru Borza into a living encyclopedia of plants. Spread across 14 hectares, it offers a journey through global flora, from Transylvanian forests to Japanese landscapes and tropical greenhouses. Its charm lies in how science and aesthetics blend seamlessly, making every section feel both educational and atmospheric. The Japanese Garden is one of the highlights: a serene space with a pond, arched bridge, and carefully arranged stones inspired by classical Japanese design. Nearby, the Roman Garden displays archaeological fragments from ancient Napoca, framed by Mediterranean plants that evoke the world of classical antiquity. The tropical greenhouse is another must‑see, home to orchids, carnivorous plants, and towering palms that recreate the humidity and density of equatorial forests. Visitors can also explore the systematic sector, where plants are arranged by botanical families, offering a clear view of evolutionary relationships. Seasonal blooms—magnolias in spring, roses in summer, and fiery foliage in autumn—give the garden a constantly changing character.

The garden belongs to Babeș-Bolyai University and works as both a research site and a peaceful escape for visitors. Wander the themed sections and you’ll find a Japanese Garden with a crimson bridge over a turtle pond, a Roman Garden with ruins from ancient Napoca and a statue of Ceres, plus ornamental, economic, and medicinal collections. Two large greenhouses shelter tropical palms, orchids, cacti, and Amazonian water plants, while outside, rose tangles, rockeries, and neoclassical statues create perfect photo spots. Don’t miss the Botanical Museum inside, where botanical curiosities, dried fruits, and fern fossils are on display. Located on Strada Republicii, the garden is a short walk from the city center. Right next door is the Central Cemetery, one of the oldest in Cluj with impressive 19th-century tombs. The “Lucian Blaga” Central University Library is also close by, and Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu is just downhill toward the Someșul Mic. From the garden gates, it’s an easy stroll to Piața Unirii with St. Michael’s Church, the Art Museum in Bánffy Palace, and Museum Square. The park benches, shaded paths, and year-round blooms make it ideal for a slow afternoon before heading back into Cluj’s buzzing café scene.
