Copou Park, also known as Copou Gardens, is located on Copou Hill along Bulevardul Carol I in northern Iași. Dating from 1834, it is the oldest public park in the city and one of the most beloved green spaces in Romania. Shaded by old trees and lined with statues of Romanian cultural figures, the park is a favorite spot for walks and reflection. Its most famous landmark is Eminescu’s Linden Tree, a centuries-old tree where poet Mihai Eminescu is said to have written some of his work. The Obelisk of Lions, erected in 1841 to honor the 1848 Revolution, also stands here. The park sits in the heart of Iași’s university district. Right next to it is the Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu,” with its grand neoclassical façade. Across the boulevard you’ll find the main building of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, home to the University Museum and the ornate Hall of Lost Steps. Also nearby is the Botanical Garden, the largest in Romania, known for its rose collections, greenhouses, and seasonal exhibitions. The Memorial House of Mihai Eminescu and Titu Maiorescu House are within walking distance. Cafés, bookshops, and student hangouts line the boulevard. From Copou, a tram ride takes you down to the Palace of Culture, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Iași’s historic center, making the park an ideal place to start or end a cultural tour of the city.
