Anastasie Fătu Botanical Garden is one of Iași’s most peaceful and fascinating landmarks, founded in 1856 as the first botanical garden in Romania. Its creator, doctor and naturalist Anastasie Fătu, envisioned a scientific garden that would educate the public and support medical research—an unusually modern idea for the mid‑19th century. Today, the garden spans over 100 hectares, making it one of the largest in Eastern Europe. Inside, visitors can explore themed sections that reveal the diversity of global flora. The Greenhouses Complex is a highlight, home to tropical palms, orchids, carnivorous plants, and a remarkable collection of cacti. The Rose Garden, arranged in elegant terraces, blooms spectacularly in summer, while the Systematic Sector presents plants grouped by botanical families, offering a clear, educational layout. One of the most interesting features is the Dendrological Area, where centuries‑old trees create a quiet, cathedral‑like atmosphere. The garden also includes a small lake, seasonal exhibitions, and a herbarium with thousands of preserved specimens used for research.

The Anastasie Fătu Botanical Garden is located on Strada Dumbrava Roșie in the Copou district of northern Iași. Founded in 1856 by physician and naturalist Anastasie Fătu, it is the oldest and largest botanical garden in Romania, covering 80 hectares. Managed by “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, it features 12 thematic sections: a rose garden with over 600 varieties, greenhouses with tropical and subtropical plants, a Japanese garden, and collections of Romanian flora. Seasonal exhibitions of azaleas, chrysanthemums, and tulips draw many visitors each year. The garden sits next to Exhibition Park, a quiet green space with a lake and the former Exhibition Hall used for cultural events. Across Bulevardul Carol I is Copou Park, Iași’s oldest public garden, home to Eminescu’s Linden Tree and the Obelisk of Lions. Also nearby are the Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu” and the main building of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, which houses the University Museum and the ornate Hall of Lost Steps. The Memorial House of Mihai Eminescu and Titu Maiorescu House are within walking distance. The Copou area has cafés, bookshops, and tree-lined boulevards popular with students. From the garden, a tram ride down Copou Hill takes you to the Palace of Culture, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Iași’s historic center, making it an ideal stop for nature and culture lovers.
