Teleki-Bolyai Library Museum

About

Petry Museum and Workshop is one of Târgu Mureș’s most charming cultural spaces, a living blend of heritage, craftsmanship, and family history. Founded by the Petry family—well‑known local butchers and artisans—the museum occupies a restored historic house where traditional Transylvanian life is presented with unusual warmth. One interesting fact is that the Petry family has been active in the city for generations, and many objects on display were used in their original workshops. Inside, visitors can explore rooms arranged like a traditional household, with wooden furniture, embroidered textiles, and everyday tools that reveal how families lived and worked in the region. The workshop area is a highlight: here, old instruments used for meat processing and food preparation illustrate the evolution of local culinary traditions. The museum also showcases vintage photographs, business ledgers, and personal items that trace the Petry family’s story from small craftsmen to respected community figures. A particularly engaging feature is the interactive space where visitors can observe demonstrations or learn about traditional techniques.

Location

The Petry Museum and Workshop is located on Strada Gheorghe Doja, just outside the historic center of Târgu Mureș. It is housed in the Petry Butcher Shop, a family business with a tradition going back to 1879. The museum presents the history of meat processing and charcuterie in Transylvania. Visitors can see old tools, machines, documents, and photos that show how sausages, salami, and smoked meats were made over the decades. From here, it’s a short walk to the Medieval Citadel of Târgu Mureș. The 17th-century fortress has preserved bastions, gates, and the Reformed Church inside, plus craft workshops and summer events. Roses Square, the city’s main pedestrian area, is about 10 minutes away. It’s lined with cafés, fountains, and Art Nouveau buildings. On the square you’ll find the Palace of Culture, a landmark building with the Hall of Mirrors, plus the Museum of History and Archaeology and the Art Museum. Also nearby are the Orthodox Cathedral, the Teleki-Bolyai Library with its rare books and Bolyai Museum, and the Town Hall with its Secession-style tower. The Museum of Natural Sciences and the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art are within easy reach too. The Petry Museum combines industrial heritage with local flavors, making it a unique stop while exploring Târgu Mureș.
