The Fortress Church, also called the Reformed Church in the Citadel, is located inside the Medieval Fortress of Târgu Mureș, in the city center just off Strada Avram Iancu. It is the oldest church in the city, originally built in Gothic style in the 14th century by Franciscan monks. After the Reformation it became a Reformed church and was rebuilt several times. The current form combines Gothic and Baroque elements, with a tall tower and a simple, bright interior. The church played a role in Transylvanian history, hosting several diets of the Transylvanian Principality. Today it remains an active place of worship and a key landmark inside the citadel walls. Steps from the fortress gates is Roses Square, the main pedestrian promenade of Târgu Mureș, lined with Art Nouveau buildings, cafés, and fountains. At one end stands the Orthodox Cathedral, with its Neo-Byzantine domes. Nearby is the Palace of Culture, an Art Nouveau masterpiece featuring the Hall of Mirrors, plus the Art Museum and the Museum of History and Archaeology. Also close by are the Teleki-Bolyai Library with rare books and the Bolyai Museum, the Town Hall, and the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art in Toldalagi Palace.
