Platoul Cornești is Târgu Mureș’s beloved hilltop escape, a natural terrace overlooking the city and offering one of its most photogenic panoramas. Locals call it simply “the Plateau,” and for decades it has been the city’s favourite place for weekend walks, family outings, and open‑air events. Its history is surprisingly old: the area was landscaped in the early 20th century as a leisure zone, and remnants of those first promenades still shape today’s pathways. What makes Platoul Cornești interesting is its blend of nature and small attractions. The tree‑lined alleys create a calm, park‑like atmosphere, while the viewpoint near the edge offers a sweeping look over Târgu Mureș—especially beautiful at sunset. The plateau also hosts the city’s zoo, one of Romania’s oldest, known for its spacious enclosures and shaded paths. Inside the recreational area you’ll find sports courts, a running track, and seasonal kiosks selling local snacks. Children love the traditional wooden playgrounds, which preserve a rustic Transylvanian aesthetic. If you walk a bit further, you may notice old stone benches and decorative elements from the interwar period, subtle reminders of the plateau’s long role as a civic gathering place.

Platoul Cornești, also known as Somostető in Hungarian, is a large hilltop park on the eastern edge of Târgu Mureș. Set above the city, it’s the highest point in town and offers sweeping panoramic views of Târgu Mureș and the Mureș River valley. The plateau is loved by locals for its fresh air, rolling hills, and dense oak forest, making it a peaceful escape from the urban center. Well-kept paths wind through the greenery, and you’ll find playgrounds, picnic areas, barbecue spots, and a professional tartan running track popular with joggers and cyclists. The main draw here is the Târgu Mureș Zoological Garden, one of Romania’s largest zoos, home to over 80 species from birds and reptiles to big cats and bears. Though Platoul Cornești feels like countryside, it’s only a few kilometers from downtown. From the plateau you can easily reach the city center to see Piața Trandafirilor, Palatul Culturii with its Art Nouveau stained glass, the Ascension Cathedral, and the Teleki-Bolyai Library. Also close are the Târgu Mureș Fortress, the Târgu Mureș National Theatre on Piața Teatrului, the Synagogue of Tg. Mureș, and the Medieval Fortress. For more nature, Complexul de Agrement “Weekend” with pools and sports facilities is nearby. Cafes, food stalls, and parking serve the area, though it can get busy on weekends.
