Varaždin City Museum

Housed in the Baroque Sermage Palace, the Varaždin City Museum is one of Croatia’s most charming cultural institutions, offering a deep dive into the city’s aristocratic, artistic, and everyday past. Founded in 1925, it grew from private collections donated by local families, which gives the museum a wonderfully personal character. Inside, visitors can explore several departments. The Cultural-Historical Collection is a highlight, filled with ornate furniture, clocks, glassware, and portraits that recreate the atmosphere of Varaždin’s noble salons. One particularly interesting item is a rare 18th‑century mechanical clock with moving figurines, a reminder of the city’s refined craftsmanship. The Archaeological Collection presents finds from prehistoric settlements and Roman-era Varaždinske Toplice, including jewellery, tools, and ceramics. The Entomological Collection, created by the famous naturalist Franjo Košćec, surprises many visitors: thousands of meticulously arranged insects displayed in delicate patterns, turning science into art. The palace itself is part of the experience. Its painted ceilings, elegant staircase, and courtyard evoke Varaždin’s golden age, when the city briefly served as Croatia’s capital.
