Herzer Palace is one of Varaždin’s most graceful architectural landmarks, a late‑19th‑century mansion that today houses the city’s renowned Entomological Museum. Built for the Herzer family, wealthy local merchants, the palace reflects the elegance of historic Varaždin with its ornate façade, tall windows, and refined interior layout. Its transformation into a museum created one of Croatia’s most unusual cultural spaces. Inside, the highlight is the World of Insects exhibition, a fascinating blend of science and artistry. Thousands of specimens—butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, and exotic species from around the globe—are displayed in carefully arranged patterns. The collection was created by Franjo Košćec, a passionate naturalist whose meticulous work turned entomology into visual poetry. Some displays recreate natural habitats, showing how insects behave, camouflage, and interact. Interactive elements make the visit engaging: magnifying stations, educational panels, and models that reveal the anatomy of insects in detail. Children especially enjoy the oversized replicas that show how tiny creatures look when scaled up. The palace’s historic rooms add charm, with restored ceilings and period décor framing the modern exhibits.

You will find the Herzer Palace located right in the vibrant center of Varaždin's historical core, standing proudly on Franjevački Square. Its central location makes it an incredibly easy landmark to find, nestled among the city's famous pedestrian streets. Because it sits right in the beating heart of the old town, you are surrounded by fantastic things to see. Right across the square sits the Franciscan Church and Monastery, famous for its striking purple facade and the iconic bronze statue of Gregory of Nin standing just outside. A short, pleasant stroll to the north brings you to the magnificent Stari Grad, the iconic white castle that houses the museum's main historical collections. If you walk just a couple of minutes east, you will land in King Tomislav Square, the lively main hub of the city where you can admire the elegant Town Hall and relax at an outdoor cafe.
