Watchtower – Management of the Varaždin City Museum

The Watchtower is one of Varaždin’s most distinctive historical structures, standing at the edge of the Old Town as a reminder of the city’s medieval defensive system. Once part of the fortifications protecting Varaždin from invasions and fires, it now serves as the administrative centre of the Varaždin City Museum and an exhibition space that reveals the city’s layered past. Inside, visitors can explore compact but engaging displays that highlight Varaždin’s development from a fortified settlement into a Baroque cultural hub. The tower’s interior preserves its original thick walls and narrow stairways, giving a sense of how guards once moved through the structure. Exhibitions often include archaeological finds, old city maps, and objects connected to Varaždin’s noble families and guilds. One particularly interesting feature is the presentation of the city’s fire history—Varaždin suffered several major fires, and the Watchtower played a key role in early warning and defence.
