The Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin (HNK Varaždin) is one of the city’s most elegant cultural landmarks, a jewel of late 19th‑century architecture that continues to shape Varaždin’s artistic identity. Built in 1873, it originally served as the Municipal Theatre, and its refined façade—with neoclassical lines, arched windows, and decorative stucco—reflects the city’s ambition during its Baroque‑inspired cultural revival. Inside, the theatre offers an intimate yet richly atmospheric experience. The auditorium features warm wooden balconies, plush seating, and a beautifully painted ceiling that adds a touch of historic grandeur. The Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin is right on the southern edge of the old town, on Augusta Cesarca Street. It is a beautiful historic building from the 19th century, with that classic theatre look, and it is still the cultural heart of the city with drama, opera and ballet. What makes its spot so nice is that you are still completely in the center. Walk two minutes north and you are on Trg Slobode with the Church of St. Nicholas, and another minute brings you to the main square with the Town Hall and all the cafes. Varaždin Cathedral on Pavlinska Street is also just around the corner. If you go a bit further north, about five to seven minutes on foot, you reach the Franjevački trg with Patačić Palace and the Franciscan Church, and then the famous Varaždin Castle, the Old Town fortress with its museum and park. The theatre itself is surrounded by nice little streets, parks and coffee spots, so people usually combine an evening performance with a slow walk through the baroque center. It is very walkable, relaxed, and everything is close together.
