Varaždin Cathedral, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the city’s most striking Baroque landmarks. Originally built as a Jesuit church in the mid‑17th century, it became a cathedral only in the 1990s, giving it the unusual distinction of being both historically old and institutionally young. Its façade, with sculpted pilasters and a dramatic central portal, reflects the confident Baroque style that transformed Varaždin during its golden era. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its soaring nave and richly decorated altars. The main altar is a masterpiece of carved wood and gilded ornamentation, crowned by expressive Baroque statues. One of the most interesting features is the organ, an instrument with a long tradition in the church; its powerful sound fills the interior during concerts and liturgical celebrations. Side chapels contain paintings by Central European masters, and visitors can admire delicate stucco work that has survived several restorations. The pulpit, decorated with swirling motifs and angelic figures, is a fine example of Jesuit craftsmanship. The cathedral also preserves historical liturgical objects, including chalices and vestments that reveal Varaždin’s religious heritage.

Location

Varaždin Cathedral is right in the pedestrian heart of Varaždin, in northern Croatia. You will find it on Pavlinska Street, just a minute or two off the main city square. It was originally built as a Jesuit church back in the 1640s, in early baroque style, and since 1997 it has been the official cathedral of the Varaždin diocese. From outside it looks quite modest, but inside it is bright, elegant and very peaceful. Because it is so central, you are surrounded by things to see. The cathedral sits at the edge of the old baroque core, so the main square with the Town Hall, cafes and shops is literally around the corner. If you walk a couple of streets north you will hit Franjevački trg with the Patačić Palace and the Franciscan church, and just beyond that is the famous Varaždin Old Town Castle, the old fortress with its moat and the City Museum. Right around the cathedral you also have the Sermage Palace with the art gallery, the Herzer Palace with the entomological collection, and plenty of little baroque palaces turned into museums. During summer the cathedral itself hosts concerts for the Varaždin Baroque Evenings festival because of its great acoustics, so it is worth checking what is on while you are there.
