Patačić‑Bužan Palace is one of Varaždin’s most elegant Baroque residences, a refined 18th‑century building that reflects the city’s golden age. Once owned by prominent noble families, the palace stands out for its harmonious façade, decorative window frames, and the subtle sculptural details that hint at the wealth and taste of its former inhabitants. Inside, the palace reveals a sequence of beautifully proportioned rooms used today for cultural events, exhibitions, and museum administration. The interior preserves fragments of its aristocratic past: stucco decorations, traces of painted ceilings, and the characteristic Baroque spatial rhythm that guides visitors from one salon to another. One of the most interesting features is the grand staircase, whose elegant curve and wrought‑iron railing showcase the craftsmanship of Varaždin’s historic metalworkers. The palace often hosts exhibitions organised by the Varaždin City Museum, making each visit slightly different. Displays may include historical documents, artworks, or thematic presentations about the city’s noble families.

Patačić-Bužan Palace sits right in the historic core of Varaždin, in northern Croatia. You will find it on Franjevački trg, also called Franciscan Square, just a short walk from the main city square. It is one of those buildings you cannot miss, white and yellow facade, elegant rococo details, built in its current form back in 1764. Back then it belonged to the Patačić family and was known as a center of city social life, and today it is still considered one of the most beautiful palaces in town. What is great about its location is that everything is basically around the corner. You are in the middle of the baroque old town, so just wander. A two minute stroll brings you to the main square with its Town Hall, cafes and the little market. The Franciscan Church of St. John the Baptist is right next to the palace, and a few streets away is the Varaždin Cathedral. If you keep walking for five minutes you reach the famous Varaždin Castle, the Old Town fortress with the white walls and the City Museum inside. Close by is also the Sermage Palace which holds the Gallery of Old and Modern Masters, and the Herzer Palace with the quirky Entomology Museum, the world of bugs. It is all compact, walkable, perfect for a slow afternoon of sightseeing.
