The Church of St. Nicholas is one of Varaždin’s oldest and most atmospheric sacred buildings, a place where medieval foundations meet Baroque elegance. First mentioned in the 12th century, it served as the city’s main parish church for centuries, shaping Varaždin’s religious and social life. Its tall bell tower, rebuilt after several fires, remains one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the historic centre. Inside, the church blends simplicity with artistic richness. The nave is spacious and bright, framed by sturdy pillars and soft Baroque ornamentation. One of the most interesting features is the main altar, a finely carved and gilded piece that reflects the craftsmanship of local workshops. Several side altars display paintings by Central European masters, offering a glimpse into the artistic networks that once connected Varaždin with Vienna and Graz. Visitors can also see remnants of earlier architectural phases: traces of Gothic ribbing, medieval stonework, and inscriptions that survived the city’s turbulent history. The organ, known for its warm tone, is used during concerts that fill the church with music.

Location

The Church of St. Nicholas is right in the middle of Varaždin, on Trg Slobode, or Freedom Square. It is the oldest parish church in the city, first mentioned way back in the 13th century, but what you see today is mostly baroque from the 18th century with a tall Gothic bell tower that survived from the earlier building. It is a lovely, bright church inside, known for its beautiful altars and that impressive 19th century organ. Location wise you could not be more central. The square itself is quiet and local, just a few steps from the main Kralj Tomislav Square with the Town Hall and all the cafes. From the church you can walk in two minutes to Varaždin Cathedral on Pavlinska Street, and in another two minutes you are at the Franjevački trg with the Patačić Palace and the Franciscan church. If you keep going south you will hit the Croatian National Theatre and a bit further the famous Varaždin Old Town Castle with its museum and park. Everything in Varaždin is super walkable, so St. Nicholas is a perfect starting point to just drift through the baroque streets, pop into a gallery like the Sermage Palace, grab a coffee, and take in that calm, old town vibe.
